Growing Readers and Writers by Teaching with Mentor Texts

From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons is a great mentor text for both reading and writing.  Gail Gibbons has an excellent collection of non-fiction books that can be used at all grade levels.  The lesson freebie I will be providing is a Kindergarten/1st Grade resource.

This book is beautifully illustrated and explains the parts of a flower, how seeds travel, the life cycle of a plant and a book based project at the end.

These lessons are best for kindergarten and first grade.  The writing activity addresses CCS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.8 and CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

It is helpful to set and display your purpose for reading before starting.  After reading the book aloud, brainstorm some answers with the class.

Next, the student can take their worksheet and fill in their own answers.  Depending on your students, they can draw a picture to represent the way a seed travels, write a word, draw a picture with a word, or draw a picture with a sentence.  You know your students best!

The second activity can be used at another time.  Students may benefit from hearing the story again, or just the pages that explain the life cycle of plants.

The cards can be cut in half and students can sequence them.  Sometimes it is nice for them to try the activity on their own and check their own work with an answer key!
