1. Two Piles
Each student gets a pile of flashcards and 2 sticky notes. Draw a “happy face” and a “not sure face” on the other. Students go through their piles - if they know the word, they put it under the happy face; if they aren’t sure, they put it in the not sure pile.Once they have made their piles, have the students read their happy face pile to you or a partner. Depending on the not-sure pile size, you can model how to stretch out each word (or a handful of words).
2. Tic Tac Toe
It’s as easy as it sounds! Have students work with a partner and give them 9 flashcards and objects they can use to mark them.Have students set up their cards like a traditional tic-tac-toe board. Then they take turns reading each word and placing their object on a card, trying to get three in a row. If a student gets one wrong, their partner can kindly tell him/her to try again!
It goes quick, so you can reshuffle or get 9 new cards and try again!
3. Fluency Voices
This can be used with the first idea (Two Piles), reading words individually, or practicing as a group. Roll the dice and then use the voice that goes with it!You can roll a voice for the whole group, or each student can use a different voice! Either way, it’s a fun way to change up flashcard practice!
4. Go Digital
Make your flashcards digital! You can display them on your Promethean/Smart Board, iPad, Chromebook, or any other device. You can go around the group having each student read a word at a time, have them read them all together, or combine both. You can even assign them to your students using Seesaw, Google Classroom, or any other classroom site you use!
5. Seesaw
You can read about other ways I use Seesaw in my reading groups.
Thank you so much for stopping by! Let me know in the comments if you have another fun way to use flashcards!
